Set of 6 George II Sgabello Hall Chairs — England, Mid-18th Century

$4,600

Set of six English hall chairs crafted from oak, circa 1860.

Based on the sgabello—a ceremonial chair developed during the Italian Renaissance and traditionally placed in the entrance halls of grand palazzos.

The form arrived in England during the early 18th century, where cabinetmakers adapted it for Georgian houses. Often painted with a family crest or monogram, these hall chairs introduced the identity of a house before a guest entered its principal rooms.

Six architectural oak frames, softened with deep blue velvet cushions.
