The traditional pottery of the Native American Sioux tribe inspires this vase by contemporary ceramicist R. Kevin Kelley. The geometric repetition of zigzagged lines is glazed with iridescent silver oxide. The rest of the vessel is Raku fired, resulting in gradients of varied maroon and black powdered shades. Raku firing is an ancient Japanese ceramic technique from the 16th century. The technique involves taking handcrafted ceramics from the kiln while red hot and placing them in flammable materials like sawdust. This oxygen-starving process results in a diverse range of glaze colors. Raku firing produces unique pieces with unpredictable outcomes, emphasizing the absence of control over the final design.
