Hand Painted African Terracotta Jar
Amphora-shaped earthenware jar in traditional African style, signed W. Portmann circa 1949. Designed with two handles and a fluted neck and decorated with abstract designs applied in red, yellow and black color ways.
Inspired by the earthenware jars crafted by the Kabyles, the Berber people of Northern Algeria embody a rich tradition spanning over two centuries. For over 200 years, Kabyle women have skillfully handcrafted earthenware pieces using locally sourced clay for domestic and ritual occasions.
